Looking for the perfect Hideaway? A Via Portofino residence might fit the bill

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Hideaway Golf Club is an enclave of spectacular homes that are nestled on 600 acres and offer breathtaking vistas. One residence that is reputed to be one of the 10 best in the development is on the market.

The property at 80675 Via Portofino stands apart because it shows the best of the desert set off by golf course greenery and a lake, all against the backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

After teeing it up at what’s colloquially referred to as “The Clive” — one of two 18-hole courses, this one designed by English golfer Clive Clark — you don’t have to go to the clubhouse to relax; just cross the 18th green and walk into your home.

More impressive than that is the design of the home. “This is no tract home,” Sal Puglisi, a broker with California Lifestyle Realty, who is offering the home for $4,995,000, says. “It was [a] custom-built [home] that the owner designed with the architect.”

One objective for the owners was to have adequate room for family to visit while giving everyone their own space.

Stewart Woodard is the award-winning architect who brought the project to life. He incorporated two spacious two-room casitas within the 5,600 square feet of living space. One of those is downstairs, with direct access to the courtyard, and offers a mix of hardscaping and landscaping to complement the overall design. The other is upstairs, with access either from the outside by a poolside patio staircase or from the inside by elevator. The upper casita features a balcony that offers an unencumbered view of the scenery that defines the Coachella Valley.

There’s plenty to bring everyone together, though, as “the pool, spa, and BBQ area are an entertainer’s dream,” Puglisi says in the listing. They line up nicely along the back of the patio.

As for the main five-bedroom, five-bath house, it boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, most of which give you an unbroken view of the 18th green, the lake, and the mountains. Arched fieldstone doorways and passages are located off the courtyard.

The house was built in 2008, five years after the Hideaway was established, and has been owned by the designer since its completion.

It lists for $4,995,000 and is sure to be snatched up once the weather improves. Puglisi said it had two offers within 24 hours of being listed, but the owner rejected those bids.

In today’s real estate climate, it is one of approximately a dozen homes in the community that are listed. That’s a lower inventory than the Hideaway is expected to have, as it’s more typical to see 25 or 30 homes for sale, Puglisi says.

Plenty of golf clubs and courses pepper the Valley, and the Hideaway — a Discovery property — is considered “by people in the know” to be one of the best, Puglisi says. Discovery properties are touted as private residential club communities that feature unique atmospheres and are often found among amazing natural settings.

Clark has been described as “an artist among golf course designers,” his website says. He was the brains behind more than 30 courses across America and Europe. The other course is a Pete Dye product. Dye’s courses are known for being challenging enough that advanced players enjoy them but not so difficult that they frustrate beginners.

Whichever course you play, they are both landscaped to complement the natural setting of the mountain desert. Bunkers, water traps, cascading waterfalls, and palm trees add a layer of intrigue to a duffer’s playing strategy.

The clubhouse is shouting distance from the Via Portofino home, so almost everything you’d want or need is at your fingertips. People can take advantage of a concierge recreation program that encourages members to stay active and busy. The club will hook its members up with a full slate of activities. These include tennis and mountain biking for those who crave physical activity or getting a bird’s-eye view of the area from the basket of a hot-air balloon and wine festivals for those who are more laid-back.
