Most people can’t wait to reach their destination, but Palm Springs Aerial Tramway does not cater to just anyone.

For those lucky enough to score tickets during the pandemic, the tramway offers a memorable trip with breathtaking views over Chino Canyon to Mountain Station where a nature lover’s holiday awaits in Mt. San Jacinto State Park.

Featuring the world’s largest rotating tram car, the tramway takes people on a pleasurable ride that spans over 2 miles, reaching an elevation of 8,516 feet. The trip only lasts 10 minutes one way but can transport a person from shorts and T-shirt weather to sweater weather as the temperatures drop 30 to 40 degrees upon reaching Mountain Station.

Those looking for snow should travel from mid-November through mid-April.

Before venturing up, be sure to check out the Tramway History Museum, the Cascade Patio and the TramView patio in the Valley Station, all open as of press time.

Mountain Station was in the midst of a major renovation project when the pandemic hit, so some areas up top remain closed for construction. The $13.3 million facelift is scheduled to be completed in the new year.

Meanwhile, visitors with an appetite can still stop in at the Pines Café. The café is offering packaged salads and sandwiches for outdoor seating only.

The Mountain Station Gift Shop is open as well for those who forgot to pack something warm to wear. Desert View Terrace, Santa Rosa Theater and the Natural History Museum also are ready to greet visitors.

Those wishing to stretch their legs have a total of 54 miles of hiking trails to choose from.

Winter fun is not only encouraged, but it is also almost mandatory. The Winter Adventure Center had yet to open as of press time, but normally rents snowshoes and cross country skis.

While Mt. San Jacinto State Park is open to visitors, camping is not currently allowed.

When open, though, there are six primitive campgrounds, four of which are typically available to the public. In addition, there are 50 other campsites with pit toilets.

Guided nature walks have been suspended until further notice, but visitors can take self-guided walks along a ¾-mile loop.

The first tram up leaves at 8 a.m. with the last car departing at 4:20 p.m. and the last car down leaving at 6 p.m.

The tramway is currently only operating Thursdays through Mondays with a limit of 25% capacity. Masks are required.

Tickets must be purchased in advance only with adults costing $26.95 and children ages 3-10 $16.95. Seniors pay $24.95. To buy tickets or to check for current operating status, visit https://pstramway.com/ or call 888-515-TRAM.

The tramway is located at 1 Tram Way in Palm Springs.
