Herb Alpert, a renowned musician, activist, record label executive, philanthropist, and beloved Coachella Valley artist, will be 90 years old in March. He announced that he will rekindle his iconic Tijuana Brass Band for the first time in many decades. 2025 is the 60th anniversary of their classic album, “Whipped Cream & Other Delights.” The album sold more than six million copies in the United States alone in 1965. Its cover became a cultural touchstone and cemented Alpert’s place as music industry royalty.
When I spoke with Alpert, he was warm, affable, and still completely hip. He expanded his repertoire to include sculpture and painting over the years and is deeply dedicated to educating students about the performing arts.
Alpert is still very active and committed to his art in all of its forms. He owns a spectacular space at the Palm Springs International Airport. A huge hangar designed by Harry Newman was transformed into a fabulous art gallery that houses many of Alpert’s large paintings and sculptures. The magnificent gallery space was open by invitation only in November 2024. But, you can see some of Alpert’s work at the Heather James Fine Art gallery in Palm Springs.
Alpert also celebrates another milestone as his work in the music industry continues after 60 years. His 50th studio album, titled “50,” was released last fall. The album pays homage to another significant marvel in his life; it recognizes 50 years of marriage to Lani Hall – his beloved wife, touring partner, and collaborator.
2025 U.S. tour dates include Alpert’s 90th birthday celebration concert at Lincoln Center in New York City.
