Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height
Let's go fly a kite
And send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite. 🎶
The classic tune “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from the charming 1964 film “Mary Poppins” captures the joy and delight of an ancient aerial ballet. Kite flying and kite-flying festivals are beautifully simple, old-fashioned pleasures with origins in Asia; they might go as far back as fifth-century BC. These days, with kids and adults glued to digital devices, what could be more enchanting and life-affirming than gathering in community and using Mother Nature’s breath to create choreography in the sky?
Fly Over La Quinta: A Kite Experience will take flight on April 5 from 8 to 10 a.m. at SilverRock Park. You can explore and learn about the history of insect- and bird-inspired kites. They are used not only for amusement but also for science, the military, meteorology, photography, generating power, experiments, and much more. Remember that Benjamin Franklin used a kite experiment in 1752 to prove that lightning was caused by electricity.
Learn the fine art of flying kites; design, craft, and build your own; or bring your favorite recreational kite. Instructors will be available to help with construction and decoration; they will guide you through the skills that are needed to let your kite soar, swoop, and ride air currents. This colorful, fun, and family-friendly event is free to attend.
